How we handle your information

Cape Town Noms is a food guide. We collect as little personal information as we can, use it only for the reasons below, and never sell it. This page explains what we collect and your rights under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

Who we are

Cape Town Noms (capetownnoms.co.za) is run by [To add: your full legal name, or your business name and registration number if you trade through a company], based at [To add: a physical or postal address for privacy requests]. Under POPIA, we are the "responsible party" for the information described here.

Our Information Officer is [To add: name (usually you, as the owner)]. You can reach us about anything on this page at hello@capetownnoms.co.za.

What we collect, and why

When you send a tip or a special

The Tell Noms and Submit a special forms ask for:

  • details of the news or special: the venue, what's happening, dates, times, address, prices and links;
  • a contact name, role, email address and phone number;
  • up to five photos, a credit for each one, and your confirmation that we may publish them.

We use this to decide whether to feature the news or special, to contact you with follow-up questions, and, if we publish it, to write about it and credit the photos. We publish the venue details, the photos and their credits. We don't publish your contact name, email address or phone number.

When you email us

If you email hello@capetownnoms.co.za, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach, and use them to reply to you.

Our newsletter (coming soon)

The newsletter isn't live yet, so we don't collect any email addresses for it. When it launches, we'll ask only for your email address, send it through our newsletter provider, and include an unsubscribe link in every email. We'll update this page before then.

When you visit the site

Like every website, our hosting provider receives technical information when you load a page, such as your IP address, browser type and the page you asked for, to deliver the page and keep the site secure. We also use Vercel Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages are popular. It doesn't use cookies, and it doesn't identify you personally.

We don't run advertising, and we don't use advertising or tracking cookies.

Who else handles your information

We use a few trusted services to run the site. Each one only gets what it needs:

  • Vercel hosts the website and processes form submissions as they are sent.
  • Resend delivers form submissions, including photos, to our inbox by email.
  • Zoho Mail hosts our email inbox, where tips, specials and your emails are stored.
  • Google Maps shows the small map on restaurant pages. When the map loads, Google may collect information and set cookies under Google's privacy policy.

Some of these services store information on servers outside South Africa, including in the United States [To add: and the region of your Zoho account's data centre, shown in Zoho Mail's admin settings]. We only use providers that protect personal information to a standard comparable with POPIA.

Share buttons on our guides only contact WhatsApp, Facebook or your email app if you tap them. Links to restaurants, Instagram and other sites take you to services with their own privacy policies.

We never sell or rent your personal information.

How long we keep it

We keep tips, specials and emails for [To add: how long, e.g. 12 months] after we last use them, then delete them. If we publish a story or special, we keep the photo credits and permission for as long as the photos are on the site. You can ask us to delete your information sooner.

Your rights

Under POPIA you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you;
  • correct it, or delete it;
  • stop using it, including for any marketing.

Email hello@capetownnoms.co.za and we'll reply within [To add: a reasonable time, e.g. 30 days]. If you're not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Regulator at inforegulator.org.za.

Keeping it safe

The site is served over a secure (HTTPS) connection, form details are sent straight to our inbox and not stored in a website database, and only [To add: who can open the inbox, e.g. "the owner"] has access to the inbox.

Changes to this page

If we change how we use personal information, for example when the newsletter launches, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
